Quick check-in to let you know what I am currently reading/ will be reading for the next week or so.
My main novel this week will be A.J. Norfield’s Windcatcher, a ~400 page fantasy novel not too distant from Eragon going from other reviews. I’m about 10% of the way through this one and it’s a struggle so far, there is definitely room for improvement in terms of writing quality, and I get the feeling no editor was involved here. Quite slow paced so far, too, I’ll have to be careful to make sure it doesn’t stop my reading progress full stop.
My alternative novel/ more relaxed read is Protecting the Dead – Katherine Gilbert. Another review copy I received as part of the TBRindr programme, this one focusing on angels and demons – not too distant from the Supernatural TV series. I haven’t spent too long with this one yet as it is mostly picked up when Windcatcher gets too samey. Only ~240 pages long and written in a simple style, I’m enjoying it so far.
My audiobook this week is a carry-over, The Great Hearts – David Oliver. Yet another TBRindr book that I’m struggling through – there will be a review for this one very soon as I have less than an hour left according to Audible. Why am I struggling? Oliver is very clearly a new writer and doesn’t do too well with dialogue or plot structure – I find that the narrative flicks about too much to really get a solid hold on the story. The ‘climax’ (if it can be called that in such a disjointed novel) only really starts at the 80% mark and that is too late for me to be honest. Some interesting ideas about but none of them are really fleshed out enough to seem original which is a shame.
I hope that at least the last two books will be finished by Sunday so I can move onto more interesting stories, with Windcatcher being finished not too long afterwards. Look out for a post soon about what else I plan on reading in August!
Let me know what you are reading this week, and if you have any thought on any of the books I’m working my way through.
I just started Sleep, Merel, Sleep by Silkie Stein last night. It was sent to me to review. I’m only 28% through it and hopefully I will finish it today. After I finish it I plan on taking a little break from reading because I have been reading like crazy this month.

The goodreads blurb sounds really interesting for that book! I get what you mean about having a break from reading – has to stay fun or you’ll burn out!

Yeah the blurb is what made me decide to give it a try. I’m not sure yet what I think about it though. Yeah you definitely don’t want to burn out on reading lol. It’s nice to take a break every once in a while. I most likely will just take a day or two off from reading not to much.
